Six hotel initiatives honoured at the second edition of the Hotelia Awards

Montreal, September 16, 2016 – Close to 150 hotels and partners from Montreal’s tourism industry attended the gala to announce the winners of the Hotelia Awards, held last night at the new Hôtel William Gray. Six hotels took top honours at this event presented by Fusion Énergie.

“We are particularly proud of the high quality of the our members’ submissions this year as well as how innovative and ingenious the initiatives were. The jury certainly didn’t have an easy job!” said Eve Paré, CEO of the Hotel Association of Greater Montréal (AHGM).

The entries were evaluated by an independent jury made up of experts from different areas of the tourism industry. Here are the six winners of the 2016 Hotelia Awards.

 

Stroke of Genius, presented by Virtuo

This award is presented to the establishment that has enhanced its visibility and reputation through an original, innovative and effective marketing strategy.

SUITE 2116, Chez Dédé - HOTEL10  

When the hotel’s administration learned that Dédé Fortin, the former frontman of the famous Quebec band Les Colocs, had lived in the Edifice Godin, HOTEL10 teamed up with 20 partners to pay him tribute by opening up the “SUITE 2116, Chez Dédé.” Its walls are adorned with murals, photos and original notes by the artist. Stained glass windows in memory of the group’s two deceased members were installed in the historic staircase leading to Dédé’s loft, and an anamorphic mural of the singer’s guitar snakes along the walls of the suite’s third-floor corridor. Information panels have also been strategically placed throughout the establishment. HOTEL10 donates 10% of the suite’s revenue to the Fondation Dédé Fortin to support and promote its cause. With a view to ensuring this project is made accessible to everyone, a special rate is offered to the singer’s fans.

The jury members felt that HOTEL10 had seized a golden opportunity that also served to honour this Quebec artist. The Chez Dédé campaign was not only original but, by involving the Fortin family and the Fondation Dédé Fortin, also demonstrated high principles. The creation of SUITE 2116 is a true legacy project that greatly enhances HOTEL10’s visibility.


Community Involvement, presented by PSAV

This award is presented to an individual or team that has demonstrated exceptional community involvement or support of a charitable cause.

Marriott Château Champlain

Over the years, many causes have touched the hearts of Château Champlain’s employees, who have supported scores of social responsibility initiatives. Here are some examples:

For 18 years, the establishment has been a proud partner of Opération Enfant Soleil, organizing numerous activities to support the less fortunate and regularly providing donations of clothing forgotten by guests, soap, bedding and pillows to various organizations. For several years, on December 24, Château Champlain employees have delivered Christmas dinner to 50 needy families in the Centre-Sud neighbourhoods. Finally, the hotel organized a barbeque that enabled them to raise $5,500 to help colleagues affected by the Fort McMurray forest fires in Alberta.

The amount of the donations collected impressed the jury, but more importantly, it was the diversity of causes and the employees’ involvement in the community that definitively swayed them.


Ambassador, presented by Tourisme Montréal

This award is presented to an individual in recognition of their outstanding contribution to promoting Montreal hotels through their knowledge and/or their actions. 

Sofitel Montreal Golden Mile – Olivier Perret, Executive Chef

Olivier Perret is more than a chef: he is a talented leader, someone who is actively involved in his community and an ambassador for the city of Montreal. This past year, Olivier Perret, helped Montreal’s gastronomic reputation shine on the international stage.

He has challenged existing paradigms and made exquisite gastronomic experiences accessible to Montrealers while getting them to discover locally sourced Quebec products. Beyond his responsibilities as the executive chef at RENOIR, he contributes his time and culinary talents to local organizations for fundraising events. He has had a direct impact on raising the city’s culinary profile while showcasing Montreal around the world.

The jury appreciated the number and range of partnerships he has established around the world, which are contributing to raising the profile of Quebec culture and the Montreal hotel scene.


HR with Heart, presented by HotellerieJobs

This award goes to the manager (supervisor or team leader) who implemented the most innovative measures to boost their team’s motivation, performance and personnel retention rates or to train new staff.

Matthieu Saunier, Executive Chef - InterContinental Montreal Hotel

Matthieu Saunier rose quickly within the ranks of the InterContinental Montreal Hotel to the position of executive chef in just a few short years. Last year, he put in place several initiatives that exemplify his participatory management style, dynamic approach and commitment. Within his department, for example, he organizes “Take your Child to Work” days for children to discover what their parents do. In collaboration with his employees, he also created a roof garden and ensures the restaurant’s food waste gets composted. And by nurturing talent from within and being actively engaged with area schools—he brings in at least five interns each year—Matthieu boasts the department with the lowest staff turnover rate.

The jury was captivated by the passion and leadership that exudes from this chef through initiatives such as, among others, the integration of family in the staff’s daily work and his effective employee retention measures.

 

Accessibility

This award recognizes an establishment that has most significantly improved accessibility for people with disabilities.

Renaissance Montreal Downtown Hotel

From its design to its construction, the Renaissance Montreal Downtown has aimed to ensure accessibility and comfort for people with reduced mobility. Accordingly, the main entrance to the hotel is obstacle-free, with a large, automatic sliding door. All the room layouts meet ADA Accessibility Guidelines and are equipped with visual alarms and visual notification devices on the doors and phones for people with hearing impairments. The bathrooms feature large, threshold-free, showers and a bench for greater comfort. The hotel staff is attentive, dedicated and will do whatever possible to provide personalized service to guests, from accompanying them to their room to sending them an email prior to their arrival to know if they have specific needs. The ultimate goal is to offer clients with reduced mobility the same level of experience and comfort as all other patrons.

Besides the welcoming facilities that meet international accessibility standards, the jury applauded the implementation of an accessibility policy adapted to the disabilities of each guest by way of customized services.


Environmental Responsibility, presented by Fusion Énergie

This award is presented to an establishment that has implemented outstanding environmental initiatives, enabling it to reduce its ecological footprint.

Le Saint-Sulpice Hôtel Montréal - Smart energy project

To contribute to the development of an environmentally responsible hotel industry, the Saint-Sulpice Hôtel Montréal is taking an active approach to sustainable development. First, the hotel launched a smart energy project, resulting in significant energy savings, the reduction of greenhouse gasses and even a grant from Hydro-Québec. The project generated a full return on investment in only 18 months! Moreover, the implementation of a new waste management system reduced recycling collections by 75%, which achieved a decrease in both costs and air and sound pollution. Lastly, three charging stations for electric vehicles were installed to encourage people to choose emission-free cars. With these new measures, the establishment is hoping to obtain a fifth Key awarded under the Green Key Eco-Rating Program.

The jury roundly praised the hotel’s environmentally responsible strategy, as well as its improved energy consumption and new waste management system.
