Montreal from 1920 to 2020

From tentative teen to accomplished adult

Founded in 1642, Montreal took almost three centuries to emerge from its infancy and enter the next stage of its life. The first signs of its coming of age appeared towards the end of the 19th century, but it wasn’t until well into the second decade of the 20th century that Montreal entered its adolescent years.

However, they didn’t last long. The end of the war marked the city’s rapid passage into adulthood and, since the 1950s, this young metropolis has been steadily developing on all fronts.

Today, in the prime of its life, Montreal is confident, mature and full of potential. And this potential is being realized in countless areas and recognized around the world.

In this, our first issue of the year of Mt1642, we bring you an overview of a century of transformation. Our team revisits some of the defining moments that have shaped Montreal’s past 100 years and the developments that have propelled it to the top of the ranking of the world’s best cities. We also introduce you to some of the remarkable personalities that have contributed to Montreal’s glory.

Tag along with us as we tour a selection of Montreal neighbourhoods. We’ll tell you about a few of the storied companies that opened their doors here and marked the city’s history, along with some of the notable achievements, innovations and discoveries across a variety of fields that took place in Montreal but whose impacts have been felt around the world! From music to health, artificial intelligence, green technologies, visual arts, transportation and gastronomy, we shine the spotlight on the best of Montreal’s ingenuity.

And as always, throughout the magazine, you’ll find a number of suggestions for one-of-a-kind dining, relaxing, musical, sports and other experiences, all of which attest to Montreal’s stellar reputation and which, in several cases, offer a tip of the hat to Montreal’s past.

So get comfy and enjoy!
